About Me
After being censored by Huffington Post in 2016 for covering the Democratic Primary from a perspective too kind to Bernie Sanders, I’ve been researching, writing, and reading from my latest book: Red, White, & Blind: The Truth About American Censorship and the Rise of Independent Media.
Red, White, & Blind
The underlying story on censorship, disinformation, and propaganda in this country is fascinating, and the book challenges assumptions and sparks great, fruitful conversations across the political spectrum.
I was born in Iowa, grew up in an intentional spiritual community in West Virginia that many called a hippie commune. Then my family moved, and I attended a large, public high school in Atlanta. Completing an East Coast regional trifecta, I studied at Amherst College in Massachusetts, and then, at twenty-one, I boarded a plane for the People’s Republic of China. My time in China pushed me in a thousand ways, turned me inside out, and transformed my life.
Double Happiness
My first book recounts my experiences teaching and traveling in China. Double Happiness: One Man’s Tale of Love, Loss, and Wonder on the Long Roads of China aims to share with others the inward and outward discoveries that changed my life and made me a happier, more confident, more curious, and more self aware person.
The book took me ten years to write. It is a travel memoir, a portrait of that large country at the turn of the century, and much more. From Hong Kong to Beijing to Tibet, it’s quite a journey, and If you enjoy travelogues or stories of personal transformation, you might just love the tale that unfolds in Double Happiness.
I returned home from China with new eyes, a deeper heart, and a broader mind.
Ever since, I’ve seen my family, my community, my city, and my country differently.
My writings have shifted to politics, culture, media, and current events, but I’m always driven towards seeing and speaking the deepest truths I am able to see. So many other brave writers inspire me today, and I consider it an honor to be able to lend my words in support of those working hard for the future of our democracy, our species, and our planet.
When I’m not writing, I’m engineering front-end internet applications here in the Bay Area, playing guitar and soccer with friends, and traveling as often as I can with my wife and two childern.
